We are just under a month away from the Otters first and only open tryouts for the 2019 season! Players will have the chance to earn their spot on the Otters First Team. The Otters have historically found some of their most crucial players through open tryouts.
In 2017, the Otters were able to find Dion Stergiotis from Carson-Newman University. Stergiotis would go on to captain the Otters that season, setting records at the time for appearances (13), minutes (1,049), assists (2), and shots (22). Stergiotis went on to play his final college season at Marshall University that fall and finished with one goal and tied for the team lead with four assists and was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team.
That same tryout, English centerback George Stanley impressed enough to earn a spot with the Otters Reserve Team. The following year, he again impressed at open tryouts and made the First Team roster. During the 2018 season, Stanley was one of the Otters most reliable defenders, making eleven appearances and playing over 800 minutes and helping the Otters secure three shutouts.
Another player that earned a spot on the 2018 roster at open tryouts was speedy winger Ayuk Tambe. From Tusculum University, Tambe impressed coaches in tryouts, showcasing his speed and ability to get behind the defense. During the PDL season, Tambe made nine appearances on the right wing and scored three goals, including a brace and game-winner against the West Virginia Chaos at home in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Tambe returned to Tusculum for his senior season and tallied nine goals and three assists to help the Pioneers earn a surprise conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Open tryouts will be held on February 23rd at 9 AM at Science Hill High School. The cost is $50 and is open to all college or high-level high school players.
